Norton’s Cut-Up features Iain Sinclair as Norton (a character known to the reader as prisoner of London in Sinclair’s Slow Chocolate Autopsy & Alan Moore’s League of Extraordinary Gentlemen).
The genesis of Hotel Bardo is with Sinclair (and the unseen but ever-present Paul Smith) at the October Gallery: we met there on what would’ve been Gysin’s 100th birthday with a newspaper from the present day and a newspaper from the morning of his birth (1916). Sinclair—Norton applied the two papers to the literary cut-up technique invented by Gysin and popularised by William S. Burroughs. Inevitably, the results say more about now than they do about then. ‡ “Lost property refers to a property that the owner has lost due to negligence, carelessness and inadvertence. When an owner of a property losses possession of a property unintentionally and involuntarily and if the owner has no knowledge about it then s/he is said to have lost the property and such property is lost property. The essential test of lost property is whether the owner parted with the possession of the property intentionally or involuntarily. To be a lost property the property must be lost unintentionally and involuntarily.”
Hotel Bardo is an effort to convey something of the artist Brion Gysin in present time. Resisting biography—refusing historicism—and instead attempting to harness the narrative borne by Gysin himself, Hotel Bardo is a transcendent un-biography and ultra-travelogue that traverses a vision of the public domain in which the living and the dead pass freely to make fun of the idea of origin and mock our ideation of cultural posterity.
The film iteration of Hotel Bardo is various, liberated and endless—shot primarily on 16mm—and is distributed by Light Cone.
A book is in the post—in the offing—& will be completed in 2019.
